Purpose

For the normal visual system the critical flicker fusion frequency (CFF) differs when tested with small and large stimulus fields, with the large field giving the highest value (de Lange, 1958; Kelly, 1961). In translucency of the iris a significant part of the light of the stimulus also stimulates peripheral parts of the visual field.

Results

We tested subjects with and without translucency of the iris with 9 and 34-degree fields. The CFF for small fields was increased for eyes with translucency of the iris.

Conclusion

The increased CFF for small fields may explain why albinos complain about working with computers.
