Purpose This survey aimed to identify the low vision services available to the one million people with visual impairment in the UK. Methods A 29 point questionnaire was presented to all known providers including hospitals, optician/optometry practices, social services, voluntary groups, appropriate universities and specialist teachers. Non-respondents were asked to participate in a short 5 point telephone questionnaire. Findings were analysed in relation to population density and rates of visual impairment. Results Data have been mapped using The Computerised Geographic Information System. Of the 2539 potential suppliers, data were obtained from 100% of all provider groups except opticians (65%). 59% of respondents offer some form of service ranging from only selling devices to comprehensive support. Provision throughout the country is variable and inadequate in places.
