The Society

People from a variety of disciplines work in the field of research and development for rehabilitation of people with vision impairment. This includes ophthalmologists, optometrists, orthoptists, physicists, psychologists, therapists, physicians, and clinical healthcare professionals, among others.

Work in this field includes:

  • quantative determination of visual functioning.
  • rehabilitation of vision impairments.
  • rehabilitation of people with vision impairments.
  • producing an integral rehabilitation model.

Research into vision impairment is becoming increasingly important because of the predominance of information exchange which requires vision, such as books, journals, video, and computer monitors. In addition, this kind of research and development is important because of the importance of vision in such practical tasks as driving. A society such as the ISLRR meets a long felt need for the exchange of knowledge and information among people working in the field of low vision research.

Aims of the Society

The objectives of the ISLRR are:

  • to stimulate scientific research in the field of low vision and in the field of rehabilitation of people with low vision.
  • to promote the exchange of information in these fields.

The society aims to achieve these goals by:

  • coordinating and distributing information by means of courses, workshops, symposia and international conferences.
  • issuing publications.
  • stimulating general communication on low vision and the rehabilitation of people with low vision.
